Pia was born in Switzerland. Shortly after completing a Commerce degree in 1971, she emigrated to South Africa where she worked as a trader, managing her own export business for 12 years. She won a few business awards as an entrepreneur; amongst them the 1992 Business woman of the year award. Pia is well travelled and has lived and worked on many continents, in the developing and the developed world.
